To me, their best works are from that 2006-2017 era. However, I find Red Before Black to be their weakest from that era and I find it to be their weakest album overall. Violence Unimagined is a tad better than that album. Too bad O'Brien will never come back to CC since Rutan is considered a permanent member. Even after O'Brien recovers fully and his probation (and whatever legal stuff he's involved with) is done and over with. I do remember reading CC wanted to have O'Brien back after he recovered. I guess that won't happen.

I'm on the opposite side of the road - the departure of Jack Owen was main factor in changing their style to one, which I dislike. So my favourite era from them is 1989-2003 ("Gore Obsessed" is their last album before "Violence Imagined", which I listened extensively). I agree, that Pat will not come back (and this is a good thing, because I don't like his style of playing). Really looking forward to their next album - let's see if Erik will fulfill expectations.

I do agree. The 2006 to 2017 period is much more interesting than the famed 90s stuff. Torture, Kill and A Skeletal Domain were all really good albums. I think Red Before Black was a really strong album as well, Code Of The Slasher ranks high in my alltime favorite list of CC songs, while I don't like Violence Unimagined too much. Don't like the album's production and I think I miss O'Brien. Seems he wrote most of the more technical and interesting songs. Best sounding album is Evisceration Plague imo.

Funny, that people favouring 2006-2017 era usually don't like last album. It's probably due to less technical music composed there. But the era before Jack left was more straightforward in their music and it' was good - if I would like to listen technical metal, I play Meshuggah, Obscura or Theory In Practice ;) But it's of course as always the matter of taste, I respect your opinion and also hope, that Pat will not come back and Erik stay for long period in the band.

When I was a teenager in the 2000s Cannibal Corpse was as kvlt as it gets, same with other bands like Dark Funeral. Then somehow it became hip to hate them.
