Nested_doll26...I know so. Especially the INDIE ROCK fans, they're mostly assholes and idiotic kids. Don't they see how bland their music is yet?

chrisfromthelc, what you say is true, now you have indie bands on major labels with a generally vague status as indie in the popular opinion. When I stated my idea of indie rock, however, I was describing the style of music. (just wanted to clarify). I also think that the label 'hipster' has a terribly dodgy connotation, it is associated with what I'd like to call "mall indie" such as Razorlight, The Hives, Arctic Monkeys, The Cribs, Franz Ferdinand, those types of bands(no offense to the fans) a commercialized form of it continuing in the steps of bands like Coldplay, but precisely The Libertines which I'd attribute it to.(not really indie at all)

The problem is, bands like http://www.newindiebands.com/bands/oswald/ Oswald could be construed as "indie" or straight "rock". I think the qualifier of not being "on a major label" is now a dated one, since you've got bands like Death Cab For Cutie (orginally on Barsuk) that are on major label distribution. What used to be black and white is a giant grey area now.

Ok, so here I go stating my idea of Indie Rock..."indie rock" unlike Indie Pop (also spelled indiepop) is for the most part a U.S. phenomenon (as everyone here likely knows, there are indie rock bands from all over the globe, but I think the majority are from the States) and, while the music is similar to indie pop to some extent, Indie Rock is just that, basically---Rock, essentially North American Trad-rock plus a U.K. indie influence, (i.e. like Oasis or Travis with a more rough edge, somewhat unhinged) so the music is not like the UK indie really (Britpop, C-86, Madchester, etc.) and with a different association than on the "other side of the Atlantic" as they say. Indie Rock is not bad music, though. Thank you.

It seems what happened to the "Alternative" name in the 90's is what is now happening the "Indie" name. Alternative was just that, and alternative to the mainstream. Now Alternative is mainstream. Now, Indie is becoming so popular, it is becoming mainstream too. It may very well be that ind. labels will become more popular then the mainstream. Personally, I don't see why it isn't already considering all the garbage currently being released by mainstream labels. Money Talks.

maybe a 15 year old see it that way, but back in the days being tagged as indie ACTUALLY means that a band is on an independent label! indie rock never meant and never will be associated to bands who appear on mtv 24/7 you smarties.
