2011 - 5 picks from my personal collection

Well, you know. 2011. What a year.

Anthrax - Worship Music

Anthrax finally got their sh*t together and put out one hell of an album. A triumphant return so to speak. Joey Belladonna sounds as good as ever and is a major improvement over the 'discount Phil Anselmo' they had on vocals previously. For once I actually agree with the single choices, "Fight 'Em 'Til You Can't" and "The Devil You Know" are two of the strongest tracks on the album. Rest of the songs on this thrashterpiece keep the quality up nicely and include more gems like "I'm Alive", "In The End" and "Revolution Screams".

Black Country Communion - 2

I liked the BCC debut album but the band took a big leap forward on their sophmore release. Everything gels and the songs feel more matured. "Faithless" features one of the best vocal performances Glenn Hughes has ever committed to tape. Joe Bonamassa also delivers two solid vocal performances in "The Battle For Hadrian's Wall" and "An Ordinary Son". Another one I should mention is "The Outsider", a great hard rocking tune that opens this amazing album. There is zero fat on this record.

Pentagram - Last Rites

Here's another band that got it's sh*t together and released a great record in 2011. Bobby Liebling sobered up and surrounded himself with Place Of Skulls members. On "American Dream" Victor Griffin handles the vocals so it's basically a Place Of Skulls track. Of course the album includes a few re-recordings of old Pentagram tracks like "Walk In The Blue Light" but newer tracks like "Into The Ground" and "8" sound just as good. Excellent return to form.

William Shatner - Seeking Major Tom

Do I even have to write anything? William Shatner doing a scifi concept double album covering classic songs with all star guests. It works so much better than you'd think. And as good the individual songs are, you really have to listen to this album from beginning to end as there is a clear narrative. Highly recommended if you're a fan of Shatner, concept albums or any of the original artists that were covered on this album.

Tangerine Dream - Edgar Allan Poe's The Island Of The Fay

Tangerine Dream returns to the picks. The Island Of The Fay is the first in TD's Sonic Poem series turning classic literary works into music. The band put out a total of three releases in the series in 2011, all of them great but this one is a personal favorite. It is slightly darker in tone (apt for Edgar Allan Poe) and many of the songs were played live when I saw the band for the first time in Manchester the same year. Personal favorites: "Cycle Of Eternity" and "Darkness Veiling The Night".
