Thu 4 Jun – Patrick Watson
A truly stunning gig!
Following the excellent support band Plants And Animals, Patrick and band started by playing through the new album 'Wooden Arms' which translated well to the live environment. Accompanied by a string quartet for many songs, the performance featured plenty of the usual fun & experimentation with instruments, including Patrick singing through a megaphone using a plunger mute over the end, and the drummer using upturned saucepans for percussion.
Following the album, they continued with a few unplugged songs, walking through the crowd, with Patrick singing (and the guitarist plugged into) what I would describe as a 'megaphone tree' attached to a rucksack! They stopped in the aisle right next to me and played a stunning version 'The Storm', my favourite track from 'Close To Paradise'. Following a standing ovation they finished off with a few more tracks from CTP, concluding with a completely unplugged 'Bright Shiny Lights', reducing to barely a whisper by the end.
The Union Chapel is always a superb venue (despite the sore bum afterwards!) but this time it was a perfect match for the performer, resulting it what will surely be one of my gig highlights of the year.
